Urban Sustainability, Restoration, and the Complex Endeavors of Reformation

We live in world that has, through globalization, urbanization, and corporate/economical avarice, a cult like need for convenience. Capitalist productive mechanisms have left the burden of an accumulation of waste to the detriment, and death of animals, environmental degradation, and physical ailments in humans across the earth. Unfortunately, the modernized desire for expedience, cheap cost, and practicality has trumped the unified drive to dismantle this destructively powerful monopoly. It is big business, to create all the waste without the responsibility of the aftermath/long term effects. Businesses don’t pay for the landfills or the environmental effects, nor do they pay for the health issues caused by the chemicals of artificial preservatives, toxins in plastic packaging, or oceanic animal deaths. There is no accountability and only revenue. Therefore, the commitment to produce and maintain a community, rooted, and envisioning new manifestations of urban sustainability, is not a trivial or light undertaking. It is a philosophy, an art, a consistent, inventive practice, and full of societal resistance.
At WOMB, with the scope of the house, all the endeavors, construction, sociability, consumption, and waste accumulation, sustainability is regularly revisited quandary. It is locating the space between consciousness, intention, and actual execution. In theory, it is a fluid and smooth operation, however as with all beginnings, it is a continual education and experimental process. We are finding as we go, the best way to contribute healing to the the planet, our bodies, and to our sacred living space. It is locating reverence for process, for understanding where materials are sourced, the time of labor for creation, and the environmental/ health effects of materials, and waste.
Some questions to regularly consider:
What is the true cost?
How are we taxing the environment and our bodies with these materials?
What is the financial output?
Whose labor and in what conditions was this made?
Can this be recycled in our space?
How can we personalize what we interact with, digest, and produce?
CONSTRUCTION:
Due to this being an older house, there was a demand for a grand transition, with a daily contractor, and team. Although this enterprise would require a lot of time, effort, and spatial evolution, restoration has a far smaller environmental impact, than finding a plot of land and starting from scratch. Along with this knowledge, it was of primary importance that we use green building, whilst considering longevity of materials, our carbon footprint, and the long term investment/effects. When the renovations began, Joui Turandot (WOMB founder) considered mud/clay organic paints, but finding the materials, proved immensely difficult. We resorted to water based, having to work with what was available and still on the healthy spectrum, environmentally, and corporeally. This indicated one of many compromises and educational bits of the WOMB endeavor.
HOUSE OPERATIONS:
After construction, the next most vital consideration, is the house maintenance and how all people who live and interact with the space, are existing within it. Joui bought recycled toilet paper, which is not only better for the environment and the same price of bleached, new paper, but is also instrumental in determining the PH of the body. We have installed an energy efficient water heater, a clay pot for water filtration, and are in the process of implementing a water capture system. This will gather rain water from the roof, which can be utilized for the sink, the showers, feeding the plants, and to consume if put through the right filtration mechanisms. We are creating our cleaning materials, with vinegar, water, and aged citrus, we make in-house soap, and utilize locally sourced dish detergent.
We are working to make WOMB a zero waste environment, which is an intersection of both, a philosophy of what we allow in the space to begin with and a practice of how we utilize the natural, and unnatural materials we engage with. We don’t want to become an accumulative hoarding environment and continually attempt innovative, creative ways to lean into the limitation of repurposing. We are planning to melt cans into decorative items and plastic for interior design projects. It is locating the fun of finding a use for all products, eco or otherwise.
WOMB PROJECTS, AND COLLABORATIONS:
At WOMBS first event, due to the conditions of our environment, lack of proper articles, and our philosophy, we asked all sixty people to bring their own dishes, and silverware. If someone was unable, or forgot, we asked people to share. This cultivated a culture of giving, getting to know one another/reliance, and did not produce paper or plastic waste as a result of festivities. We ultimately want to be a trash free zone and create conditions that demand this.This means that all events by outside productions, must be ok to cook in our kitchen, or get charged an in house catering fee.
It is imperative that we live out our ideology in as many ways as possible, but also in the effort to spark others to invest in an ecologically sound praxis.
TIENDA/CREATIVITY: ECO-FRIENDLY ART, BEAUTY, AND RECYLED INTERIOR DECORATION
We have a tienda here at WOMB, from where we sell the products we make in-house. These products range from body care, to incense, to jewelry, and various arts, and crafts produced out of repurposed materials. We are looking to sell unique formations made by the artists in residencies and to reuse all materials from the house, in this space. It is a soul feeding process to conjure beauty out of recycling and reworking preloved materials. We have projects utilizing food cans for decorative arts, lamps, and jars. We have beeswax candles repurposed into our handmade soaps. We are forming projects to recycle our plastic, reuse paper to make hanging paper mache, and use left over materials to make one of a kind pillows. We are continually finding new inspiration and will have this through line ethic with all that is sold by the collective. In addition, we will solely use preowned, and preloved furniture for all decorated spaces. It is better made, higher value long term, and best for the environment. We encourage this relationship to shopping, interior decorating, business, and reformation.
FOOD/WASTE/COMPOST:
The last, and essential crux of sustainability, is about food, waste, and composting. We are currently growing vegetables, fruits, and medicinal herbs on our roof, and in our garden. However, growing whilst remodeling, furthers any natural complications. It has been a lot of loss, healing in our makeshift greenhouse/nursery, and learning what it means to be responsible for the dramatic variety of conditional demands. Thankfully, we have established a beautiful foundation, with our homemade soil. We compost all our food, which then sits, turns for two to three months, and eventually creates a perfect soil. We mix this all natural soil with saw dust, or coconut shells, which will promote antimicrobial, root growth, and generate necessary aeration for the plants. In time, we would like to eat primarily from our garden, and cyclically utilize waste to produce more for our consumption needs.
Incrementally, with sensitively, and attention to detail, we can unfold all the ways we can be eco-conscious, without complete compromise, and embody the ethics we want to suffuse this earth with. It is not only in our personal best interest, for our health and our Mother, but a practice in community building, reverence of process, and guiding us to contact a deep appreciation for all we touch, digest, and interact with.

Vivimos en un mundo que tiene, a través de la globalización, la urbanización y la avaricia empresarial / económica, una necesidad de conveniencia similar a un culto. Los mecanismos productivos capitalistas han dejado la carga de una acumulación de desechos en detrimento y la muerte de animales, degradación ambiental y dolencias físicas en los seres humanos en todo el mundo. En WOMB, con el alcance de la casa, la construcción, la sociabilidad, el consumo y la acumulación de residuos, la sostenibilidad se revisa periódicamente dilema. Es ubicar el espacio entre la conciencia, la intención y la ejecución real. CONSTRUCCIÓN:
A que se trataba de una casa más antigua, existía la demanda de una gran transición, con un contratista y un equipo diarios. Aunque esta empresa requeriría mucho tiempo, esfuerzo y evolución espacial, la restauración tiene un impacto ambiental mucho menor que encontrar una parcela de tierra y comenzar desde cero. Junto con este conocimiento, era de primordial importancia que utilizáramos la construcción ecológica, teniendo en cuenta la longevidad de los materiales, nuestra huella de carbono y la inversión. Cuando comenzaron las renovaciones, Joui Turandot (fundador de WOMB) consideró pinturas orgánicas de barro / arcilla, pero encontrar los materiales resultó inmensamente difícil. Recurrimos a los basados en agua, teniendo que trabajar con lo que estaba disponible y aún en el espectro saludable, ambiental y para el cuerpo. Esto indicó uno de los muchos compromisos y partes educativas del esfuerzo de WOMB.
OPERACIONES DE LA CASA:
Después de la construcción, la siguiente consideración más importante es el mantenimiento de la casa y cómo todas las personas que viven e interactúan con el espacio existen dentro de él. Joui compró papel higiénico reciclado, que no solo es mejor para el medio ambiente y al mismo precio que el papel nuevo blanqueado, sino que también es fundamental para determinar el PH del cuerpo. Hemos instalado un calentador de agua de bajo consumo, una olla de barro para filtrar el agua y estamos en el proceso de implementar un sistema de captura de agua. Esto recogerá agua de lluvia del techo, que se puede utilizar para el fregadero, las duchas, alimentar las plantas y consumir si se pasa por los mecanismos de filtración adecuados. Estamos creando nuestros materiales de limpieza, con vinagre, agua y cítricos añejados, fabricamos jabón interno y utilizamos detergente para platos de origen local.
Estamos trabajando para hacer de WOMB un entorno de cero residuos, que es una intersección de ambos, una filosofía de lo que permitimos en el espacio para empezar y una práctica de cómo utilizamos los materiales naturales y no naturales con los que nos relacionamos. No queremos convertirnos en un entorno de acaparamiento acumulativo e intentar continuamente formas innovadoras y creativas de apoyarnos en la reutilización. Estamos planeando fundir latas en artículos decorativos y plástico para proyectos de diseño de interiores. Es encontrar la diversión de encontrar un uso para todos los productos, ecológicos o no.
PROYECTOS Y COLABORACIONES WOMB:
En el primer evento de WOMB, debido a las condiciones de nuestro entorno, la falta de artículos adecuados y nuestra filosofía, les pedimos a las sesenta personas que trajeran sus propios platos y cubiertos. Si alguien no pudo, o se olvidó, le pedimos a la gente que comparta. Esto cultivó una cultura de dar, conocerse unos a otros / confianza, y no produjo desperdicios de papel o plástico como resultado de festividades. En última instancia, queremos ser una zona libre de basura y crear las condiciones que lo exijan. Esto significa que todos los eventos de producciones externas deben estar bien para cocinar en nuestra cocina o se les debe cobrar una tarifa de catering interno.
Es imperativo que vivamos nuestra ideología de tantas maneras como sea posible, pero también en el esfuerzo de impulsar a otros a invertir en una praxis ecológicamente sólida.
TIENDA / CREATIVIDAD: ARTE, BELLEZA Y DECORACIÓN DE INTERIORES RECICLADOS ECOLÓGICOS
Tenemos una tienda aquí en WOMB, desde donde vendemos los productos que fabricamos internamente. Estos productos van desde el cuidado del cuerpo hasta el incienso, las joyas y diversas artes y artesanías producidas con materiales reutilizados. Buscamos vender formaciones únicas realizadas por los artistas en residencias y reutilizar todos los materiales de la casa, en este espacio. Es un proceso de conjurar la belleza del reciclaje y reelaboración de materiales. Tenemos proyectos que utilizan latas de comida y frascos. Tenemos velas de cera de abejas reutilizadas en nuestros jabones hechos a mano. Estamos formando proyectos para reutilizar papel para hacer papel maché arte y usar materiales sobrantes para hacer almohadas únicas. Continuamente estamos encontrando nueva inspiración y la tendremos a través en todo lo que vende el colectivo. Además, solo usaremos muebles usados y pre-amados para todos los espacios decorados. Está mejor hecho, es de mayor valor a largo plazo y es mejor para el medio ambiente. Fomentamos esta relación con las compras, la decoración de interiores, los negocios y la reforma.
ALIMENTOS / RESIDUOS / ABONOS:
El último y esencial quid de la sostenibilidad tiene que ver con los alimentos, los desechos y el compostaje. Actualmente estamos cultivando verduras, frutas y hierbas medicinales en nuestro techo y en nuestro jardín. Sin embargo, crecer mientras se remodela, favorece las complicaciones naturales. Ha sido una gran pérdida, curación en nuestro invernadero / vivero improvisado y aprender lo que significa ser responsable de la dramática variedad de demandas condicionales. Afortunadamente, hemos establecido una hermosa base con nuestra tierra casera. Compostamos toda nuestra comida, que luego se asienta, gira durante dos o tres meses y, finalmente, crea un suelo perfecto. Mezclamos esta tierra totalmente natural con aserrín o cáscaras de coco, lo que promoverá el crecimiento antimicrobiano de las raíces y generará la aireación necesaria para las plantas. Con el tiempo, nos gustaría comer principalmente de nuestro jardín y utilizar cíclicamente los desechos para producir más para nuestras necesidades de consumo.
De manera incremental, con sensibilidad y atención a los detalles, podemos desarrollar todas las formas en las que podemos ser conscientes del medio ambiente, sin comprometer por completo, y encarnar la ética que queremos impregnar esta tierra. No es solo en nuestro mejor interés personal, para nuestra salud y nuestra Madre, sino una práctica en la construcción de la comunidad, la reverencia del proceso y la guía para establecer un profundo aprecio por todo lo que tocamos, digerimos e interactuamos.
