Relya Slaby, sketching out the scene
Having been born in Japan, Reylia uses the influences from her upbringing to create
works and worlds that thread in the Japanese aesthetic. Her creative process involves
sketching out the scene, building sets and props from scratch, as well as film and
darkroom practices.

Her photos are a rich blend of the Japanese aesthetic and is intended to intimately reveal her
personal experiences and background. From the culture of Japan to being a ‘third culture kid,’ she
desires to weave all the different aspects of life into her art. She strongly believes in an empirical
body of work and is adamant when it comes to adding an individual and unique meaning to each
image.
Photography entered her life as a gradient. Originally a semi-professional graphite pencil artist,
Reylia made a gradual switch to photography around her teen years, and then discovered Fine Art
photography in 2012. It instantly struck a chord, and she knew that she had finally found a special
outlet of self-expression, and for years immersed herself in the fine art world through books, online
sources, and other artist’s work that inspired and moved her.
Reylia was born in Osaka, Japan, and is currently based between Japan and the U.S. Her art
practice focuses on fine art and includes photography, mixed media, and poetry.
