The art of the short story, they say, is harder than the novel. I believe it. To get to the heart of all that was last year in just a few pages feels insurmountable, yet the reason I persist is because in my cells I know that the act of writing this entry and uncovering the essence of what “moved the dial forward”, in it self is the final alchemy of crystalizing a year of learning, into words on the page. And as the story of Womb continues to unfold like an opera, full of dramatic ups and downs, all of which feeds the soil of wisdom and makes the gains richer because they were hard earned.
2023 marked the beginning of the end of major construction. Three years of living with constant banging and dust is no joke. From having 10 workers or more per day on the house, it was reduced in half and then by the middle of the year practically none. The last significant addition was the completion of the second terrace which is now in full bloom, literally. This mini terrace, I like to call the VIP lounge, sits on top of the Artist Suite and is now covered in flowering vines and herbs. The terrace also encompasses a part of the Womb vision that I see expanding this year which is the continued dedication to urban permaculture and creative solutions through recycling. For instance, the floor of the terrace is made of recycled crates and varnished with recycled oil from the local mechanic. The retaining wall is decorated with leftovers from older projects and random objects that sometimes clutter the grounds; old doors, the front of a vintage stereo, sections from the old kitchen pantry. The experience of lounging in the new space is one of personality and intention, this energy stems from a true abundance, abundance of what creative solutions lay before us and taking these actions create environments more beautiful then if you just bought everything new.
The topic of abundance and money in 2023 marked the beginning of programming for the well-being of artists beyond their artwork. The age-old archetype of the starving artist was a theme I wanted to address because it has plagued me in my life, the creation of Womb is a direct result of healing my traumas related to money.Thus, I sponsored a friend and money healer from California Megan Lathrop, to come to Mexico to be the first Artist in Residence of 2023 and develop the first version of (what I hope to be many more iterations of the program) Artists and Money. The workshop brought together around 12 artists of unique disciplines and allowed for honest and vulnerable conversations about the way we all create unhealthy relationships to money. We workshopped how this not only affects our personal lives but also collaborations and our community at large; how as artists, we hurt each other and continue the legacy of victimization by creating competition rather than unity. That said, the challenge and the beauty of being an artist is that we are black sheep, outliers and rebels, so coming together is not our forte. None the less, healthy community amongst artists is one of the long-term goals and values at Womb. Community for me are like a tree; the deeper the roots, the taller the tree can grow.
Growth ingeneral was a big theme for 2023—it’s amazing what you can accomplish when youaren’t covered in construction dust—in every area of programing we hadsignificant gains. The Artist In Residency Program grew in many ways the typeof artist who is aligned with the values of Womb was phenomenal, for instance LilaVail, our second AIR came to us from England, she uses 100% repurposed materials for her sculptures and furthermore, almost all of her pieces arebased on flowers. Her vision and art is exactly what Womb continues to work towards a world that no longer considers trash an option. It was an eye-openingexperience witnessing the work of Lila, finding use for the most unexpected items, like turning the little pill plastic containers into bits of stamens offlowers. She even uses recycled materials to join together her sculptures, using nothing new or bought to connect the pieces. Even in my own art practiceI still buy materials for the joining of my projects. At the end of Lila’s residency she exhibited her first solo show of her work called, RedefiningEndings. A show that provoked contemplation of our wasteful habits and tomake changes so that our actions are healing versus hurting of the environment. One of the core values ofWomb is to becoming a zero-waste space, we have yet to meet these goals, but the residency of Lila inspires that by collaborating with artists who are dedicated to this same principle in their lives and art practice, we are closer than wethink to meeting this goal.
Our ThirdArtist In Residence is Raquel Redondo a florist from Spain is still continuing her residency at Womb and will be featured in Art Club 4 on Feb 17th where she will give a class on making bouquets and will create an installation/flower sculpture for guest to view. Raquel brings a love of flowers and plants, and beyond her private work is helping us care for our gardens and overall plant health at Womb.
Our lastAIR, Giorgia Valli from Italy, a painter and photographer, with work that also speaks to the soul of Womb, while only with us for a month, she is an example that Womb is not just for production, it’s also a retreat for artists to rest and contemplate their practice while still being immersed in an artistic environment.
As far as event programming, where 2022 was about experimenting with new levels of technology, 2023 was a return to a simpler way of creating experiences. The two events I produced, Art Club 3and El Estar Presente, I returned to my intuition of simple touches that make an event special, that don’t require challenging design and technology rather just thought and care. ArtClub 3: Cuerpo de Barro was a great example, where the main décor was flower arrangements and candles, the rest of the house and lighting was perfect and there was no need to complicate thing. For my guests, they said it was the bestArt Club to date, an intimate evening making clay tiles with the ceramicist Melissa Grassie, listening to DJ Zol Katarina and Dj Haryleson while drinking mezcal provided by our new collaborator Mezcaltatl, and savoring a Oaxacan tasting menu by Yamil Guzman, while a butoh performer covered in mud performed throughout the audience.
El Estar Presente or To Be Present was a collaboration with sound healer Sergio Limón and CA ArtCollective where we combined sound meditation and an art installation. The concept was to ground the body throughmusic and then to immerse yourself in an art installation by CA Art Collectivethat was installed in the staircase up to the roof, the participants got toview art in a meditative state without speaking or cellphones. This experiencewas a huge success in my mind of supporting people to awaken into their bodiesand intuition.
Immersive theater and performance dominated the artist programming.
We began the year with the first-ever mega hit (over 200 people attended) immersive performance of Woyzeck by Xavier Villanova where Womb literally wastransformed into a small Mexican village.
Pushing of boundaries and concepts of sex was Sex oral by Carlos Mugica who officially launched the new, mini rooftop terrace into a behind-the-scenes porno. Verano a new vision ofShakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream by Juliana Spinola was an experience that took advantage of the gardens at Womb to create a romantic and mysterious setting for the play. Fronteras, the most Avant-guard of the productions, a wild odyssey of characters and experiences guiding guests throughout all the spaces of the house. All of the guest productions at Womb continued to expand what I thought of as possible for the space and why I love collaborating with different artists because they teach me how to see the space with new eyes.
The WombTeam grew! With the new House Manager and personal assistant, Ingrid Nava.Ingrid is an actor, singer and overall creative soul. Beyond her artistic talents she is the best right-hand woman I could imagine to help me with growing Womb. Most importantly, having Ingrid I was able to relax a little and finally enjoy the events this year.
Workshopsand more! Dan Silva, the muralist who created the main mural on the front ofWomb will be in charge of cultivating the fine arts workshops at Womb thisyear. His vision is to make Womb the hub of the particular technique of muralism he created and to bring it to the community of Portales and beyond.
Womb has anew look! To close out 2023 we started a collaboration with Anabel Venegas an incredible artist and performer but also a marketing and branding diva. Sheunderstands the aesthetic vision of Womb like no other and I am delighted beyond words to have a visual language that is completely aligned.
What needs improvement? 2023 was a big growth year and with that comes growing pains, much like serial dating you get to know what you want in a relationship, the same goes for artistic collaborations. Understanding the limitations of what works and what doesn’t for Womb was learned by trial and error. Not everyone is a fit and that’s ok. It’s not about more, it’s about quality. Oh….we are still needing to create the signature Womb cocktail…any takers?
What does the future hold? What are the desires and dreams for Womb? I would like to make more contact with the local neighborhood, and to contribute to the betterment. I want Womb to offer free or by donation events so that new people can get to know Womb. To grow our funding model so we can sponsor international artists who work in sustainability to come and share their gifts to the local community. I went to Kenya last year for an artist retreat and met some inspiring artists I would love to bring here to share their gifts. I want to continue the track of financial steadiness, to thrive and continue to find away to support artists create their visions. I hope that Womb has more resources to dedicate to sponsoring more artists to create their works while being able to sustain ourselves. I don’t want Womb to be ruled by money, rather that money continues to be a supporting factor that serves as an ally and notas a god. I pray for continued deepening of the Womb community for new strategic alliances to be made or stronger bonds with the alliances we already have, where together we help each other grow stronger.

Dicen que el arte del relato corto es más difícil que el de la novela. Yo lo creo. Llegar al corazón de todo lo que fue el año pasado en unas pocas páginas parece insuperable, pero persisto porque en mis células sé que el acto de escribir esta entrada y desvelar la esencia de lo que"hizo avanzar el dial" es, en sí mismo, la alquimia final de cristalizar un año de aprendizaje en palabras sobre la página. Y mientras la historia de Womb sigue desarrollándose como una ópera, llena de altibajos dramáticos, todo lo cual alimenta el suelo de la sabiduría y hace que las ganancias sean más ricas porque se han ganado con esfuerzo.
2023 marcó el principio del fin de las grandes obras. Tres años conviviendo con golpes y polvo constantes no es ninguna broma. De tener 10 trabajadores o más al día en la casa, se redujo a la mitad y luego, a mediados de año, prácticamente ninguno. La última adición significativa fue la finalización de la segunda terraza que ahora está en plena floración, literalmente. Esta mini terraza, a la que me gusta llamar "sala VIP", se encuentra encima de la Suite del Artista y ahora está cubierta de enredaderas y hierbas en flor. La terraza también abarca una parte de la visión de Womb que veo ampliarse este año, que es la dedicación continuada a la permacultura urbana y a las soluciones creativas a través del reciclaje. Por ejemplo, el suelo de la terraza está hecho de cajas recicladas y barnizado con aceite reciclado del mecánico local. El muro de contención está decorado con restos de proyectos anteriores y objetos aleatorios que a veces desordenan el terreno: puertas viejas, la parte frontal de un equipo de música antiguo, secciones de la antigua despensa de la cocina. La experiencia de descansar en el nuevo espacio es de personalidad e intención, esta energía proviene de una verdadera abundancia, abundancia de qué soluciones creativas tenemos ante nosotros y tomando estas acciones se crean entornos más bellos que si simplemente se comprara todo nuevo.
El tema de la abundancia y el dinero en 2023 marcó el inicio de la programación para el bienestar de los artistas más allá de su trabajo artístico. El viejo arquetipo del artista hambriento era un tema que quería abordar porque me ha atormentado en mi vida, la creación de Womb es un resultado directo de la curación de mis traumas relacionados con el dinero. Así, patrociné a una amiga y sanadora de dinero de California Megan Lathrop, para que viniera a México para ser la primera Artista en Residencia de 2023 y desarrollar la primera versión de (lo que espero sean muchas más iteraciones del programa) Artistas y Dinero. El taller reunió alrededor de 12 artistas de disciplinas únicas y permitió conversaciones honestas y vulnerables sobre la forma en que todos creamos relaciones poco saludables con el dinero. Analizamos cómo afecta esto no sólo a nuestras vidas personales, sino también a las colaboraciones y a nuestra comunidad en general; cómo, como artistas, noshacemos daño unos a otros y continuamos el legado de victimización creando competencia en lugar de unidad. Dicho esto, el reto y la belleza de ser artistaes que somos ovejas negras, atípicos y rebeldes, por lo que unirnos no es nuestro fuerte. Sin embargo, una comunidad sana entre artistas es uno de losobjetivos y valores a largo plazo de Womb. Para mí, la comunidad es como un árbol: cuanto más profundas son las raíces, más alto crece.
El crecimiento en general fue uno de los grandes temas de 2023: es increíble lo que se puede conseguir cuando no se está cubierto de polvo de la construcción. Por ejemplo, Lila Vail, nuestra segunda artista residente, vino de Inglaterra, utiliza materiales 100% reutilizados para sus esculturas y, además, casi todas sus obras se basan en flores. Su visión y su arte son exactamente lo que Womb sigue trabajando para conseguir un mundo que ya no considere la basura como una opción. Fue una experiencia reveladora presenciar el trabajo de Lila, que encuentra utilidad a los objetos más inesperados, como convertir los pequeños envases de plástico de pastillas en trozos de estambres de flores. Incluso utiliza materiales reciclados para unir sus esculturas, sin usar nada nuevo ni comprado para conectar las piezas. Incluso en mi propia práctica artística sigo comprando materiales para unir mis proyectos". Al final de la residencia,Lila expuso su primera exposición individual, Redefining Endings. Una muestra que suscitó la reflexión sobre nuestros hábitos de derroche y la necesidad de hacer cambios para que nuestras acciones sean curativas y no perjudiciales para el medio ambiente. Uno de los valores fundamentales de Womb es convertirse en un espacio de cero residuos, todavía tenemos que cumplir con estos objetivos, pero la residencia de Lila inspira que mediante la colaboración con artistas que se dedican a este mismo principio en sus vidas y la práctica del arte, estemos más cerca de lo que pensamos para alcanzar este objetivo.
Nuestra tercera artista en residencia es Raquel Redondo, una florista de España que continúa su residencia en Womb y que participará en el Art Club 4 el 17 de febrero, donde dará una clase sobre cómo hacer ramos de flores y creará una instalación/escultura floral para que la vean los invitados. Raquel trae un amor por las flores y las plantas, y más allá de su trabajo privado nos está ayudando a cuidar de nuestros jardines y la salud general de las plantas enWomb.
Nuestro último AIRE, Giorgia Valli de Italia, pintora y fotógrafa, con un trabajo que también habla del alma de Womb, aunque sólo lleva con nosotros un mes, es un ejemplo de que Womb no es sólo para la producción, también es un retiro para que los artistas descansen y contemplen su práctica sin dejar de estar inmersos en un entorno artístico.
En cuanto a la programación de eventos, mientras que en 2022 se trataba de experimentar con nuevos niveles de tecnología, 2023 fue una vuelta a una forma más sencilla de crear experiencias. En los dos eventos que produje, Art Club 3 y El Estar Presente, volví a mi intuición de los toques sencillos que hacen que un evento sea especial, que no requieren un diseño y una tecnología desafiantes, sino sólo pensamiento y cuidado. Art Club 3: Cuerpo de Barro fue un gran ejemplo, donde la decoración principal eran arreglos florales y velas, el resto de la casa y la iluminación era perfecta y no había necesidad de complicar las cosas. Mis invitados dijeron que fue el mejor Club de Arte hasta la fecha, una velada íntima haciendo azulejos de barro, escuchando a DJ Zol Katarina y Groove Sounds mientras bebían mezcal proporcionado por nuestro nuevo colaborador Mezcaltatl, y saboreando un menú degustación oaxaqueño de Yamil Guzman, mientras un artista butoh cubierto de barro actuaba entre el público.
El Estar Presente o ToBe Present fue una colaboración con el sanador de sonido Sergio Limón y CA ArtCollective donde combinamos la meditación de sonido y una instalación de arte. El concepto consistía en conectar elcuerpo con la tierra a través de la música y sumergirse en una instalaciónartística de CA Art Collective instalada en la escalera que subía a la azotea,donde los participantes podían contemplar el arte en estado de meditación, sinhablar y sin teléfonos móviles. En mi opinión, esta experiencia fue un granéxito para ayudar a la gente a despertar a su cuerpo y a su intuición.
El teatro inmersivo yla performance dominaron la programación artística.
Empezamos el año conla primera representación inmersiva de gran éxito (asistieron más de 200personas) de Woyzeck, de Xavier Villanova, en la que Womb se transformóliteralmente en un pequeño pueblo mexicano.
Sexoral, de CarlosMugica, fue el encargado de traspasar los límites y los conceptos del sexo conla inauguración oficial de la nueva mini terraza en la azotea. Verano, una nueva visión del Sueño de unanoche de verano de Shakespeare, a cargo de Juliana Spinola, fue una experienciaque aprovechó los jardines de Womb para crear un escenario romántico ymisterioso para la obra. Fronteras, la más vanguardista de las producciones,una alocada odisea de personajes y experiencias que guían a los invitados portodos los espacios de la casa. Todas lasproducciones invitadas en Womb siguieron ampliando lo que yo considerabaposible para el espacio y por qué me encanta colaborar con diferentes artistas,porque me enseñan a ver el espacio con nuevos ojos.
El equipo de Womb creció. Con la nueva House Manager y asistente personal, Ingrid Nava. Ingrid es actriz, cantante y, en general, un alma creativa. Más allá de su talento artístico, es la mejor mano derecha que podía imaginar para ayudarme a hacer crecer Womb. Y lo que es más importante, teniendo a Ingrid he podido relajarme un poco y disfrutar por fin de los eventos de este año.
¡Talleres y mucho más!Dan Silva, el muralista que creó el mural principal de la fachada de Womb, se encargará este año de cultivar los talleres de bellas artes en Womb. Su visiónes hacer de Womb el centro de la técnica particular de muralismo que creó y llevarla a la comunidad de Portales y más allá.
¡Womb tiene un nuevo look! Para cerrar 2023 comenzamos una colaboración con Anabel Venegas, una increíble artista e intérprete, pero también una diva del marketing y las marcas. Ella entiende la visión estética de Womb como ninguna otra y estoy encantada más allá de las palabras de tener un lenguaje visual que está completamente alineado.
¿Qué hay que mejorar? 2023 ha sido un año de gran crecimiento y eso conlleva dolores de crecimiento.Al igual que en las citas en serie uno llega a saber lo que quiere en una relación, lo mismo ocurre con las colaboraciones artísticas. Comprender las limitaciones de lo que funciona y lo que no para Womb se aprendió por ensayo y error. No todo el mundo encaja y no pasa nada. No se trata de más, sino de calidad. Oh.... Todavía necesitamos crear el cóctel característico de Womb...¿algún interesado?
¿Qué nos depara el futuro? ¿Cuáles son los deseos y sueños para Womb? Me gustaría entrar más en contacto con el vecindario local y contribuir a mejorarlo. Quiero que Womb ofrezca eventos gratuitos o por donación para que nuevas personas puedan conocer Womb. Hacer crecer nuestro modelo de financiación para que podamos patrocinar a artistas internacionales que trabajan en sostenibilidad para que vengan a compartir sus dones con la comunidad local. El año pasado fui a Keniaa un retiro artístico y conocí a algunos artistas inspiradores que me encantaría traer aquí para que compartieran sus dones. Quiero seguir por la senda de la estabilidad financiera, prosperar y seguir encontrando la manera de apoyar a los artistas para que creen sus visiones. Espero que Womb tenga más recursos para dedicarlos a patrocinar a más artistas para que creen sus obras y, al mismo tiempo, poder mantenernos a nosotros mismos. No quiero que Womb serija por el dinero, sino que el dinero siga siendo un factor de apoyo que sirva como aliado y no como dios. Rezo para que se siga profundizando en la comunidad de Womb, para que se establezcan nuevas alianzas estratégicas o vínculos más fuertes con las alianzas que ya tenemos, donde juntos nos ayudemos a crecer más fuertes.
