Artist in Residence: Yasmine Weiss
Womb is very excited to announce our latest resident Yasmine Weiss, a painter of French origin residing in Brussels, Belgium. Her work drew our attention for its combination of hyper-realism, street-art edginess and surrealism. In her own words she explains her art:
I'm a French-Algerian visual artist, and an art school and History of Art dropout.
I'm ridiculously grateful for the privilege of doing this work. The way I see it, we live in very challenging times where art, beauty, and humor are essential survival tools, required both to cultivate hope and connection, and to foster the state of mind required to creatively address, and adapt to, our present and future tribulations.
So as far as I’m concerned, this work is my contribution to the health and well-being of my community —that may, or may not, be you.
Either way, I’m happy you’re there.
The work articulates around themes which might appear gloomy, unnerving, or even tragic to some people.
For the record, that's not (only) how it appears to me.
The old saying, that only by facing darkness can we get to the light, gives only a partial view on the issue of darkness, and leaves out completely its intrinsic value as such. Shadow defines a beautiful form just as much as light does — no pretty shape would be pretty without both. Our modern rejection of darkness — even in its natural, healthy, healing and beautiful form — has left us with a very anxious, flat and one-dimensional view of the world and life, breeding much violence and unnecessary suffering in the process.
And because I have no choice but to include darkness in my experience, it's very much included in my work too.
The specific strand of Beauty I seek to express thrives on contrast.
To understand the philosophy behind her paintings, she offers the following quote:
[A] mood of universal destruction and renewal...has set its mark on our age. This mood makes itself felt everywhere, politically, socially, and philosophically. We are living in what the Greeks called the kairos —the right moment— for a "metamorphosis of the gods,” of the fundamental principles and symbols. (...) Coming generations will have to take account of this momentous transformation if humanity is not to destroy itself through the might of its own technology and science.

Besides her great talent, Yasmine is very much aligned with the values of WOMB and understands the hope we hold for creating a more beautiful world through art and community. During her residency she will be creating a piece dedicated to Womb based on the vision and energies she perceives during her stay.

Womb está muy emocionado de anunciar a nuestra última artista Yasmine Weiss, pintora de origen francés que reside en Bruselas, Bélgica. Su trabajo llamó nuestra atención por su combinación de hiper-realismo, arte callejero y surrealismo. En sus propias palabras, esto es lo que tiene que decir:
Soy un artista visual franco-argelino, y una escuela de arte y abandonó la Historia del Arte. Estoy ridículamente agradecido por el privilegio de hacer este trabajo. Tal como yo lo veo, vivimos en tiempos muy desafiantes donde el arte, la belleza y el humor son herramientas de supervivencia esenciales, necesarias tanto para cultivar la esperanza y la conexión, como para fomentar el estado mental requerido para abordar creativamente y adaptarse a nuestras tribulaciones presentes y futuras.
Entonces, en lo que a mí respecta, este trabajo es mi contribución a la salud y el bienestar de mi comunidad, que puede o no ser usted. De cualquier manera, estoy feliz de que estés allí. La obra se articula en torno a temas que pueden parecer sombríos, desconcertantes o incluso trágicos para algunas personas. Para que conste, no es (sólo) así como me parece. El viejo dicho, que sólo enfrentando la oscuridad podemos llegar a la luz, da sólo una visión parcial sobre el tema de la oscuridad, y deja de lado por completo su valor intrínseco como tal.
La sombra define una forma hermosa tanto como la luz: ninguna forma bonita sería bonita sin ambas. Nuestro rechazo moderno de la oscuridad, incluso en su forma natural, saludable, curativa y hermosa, nos ha dejado con una visión muy ansiosa, plana y unidimensional del mundo y la vida, generando mucha violencia y sufrimiento innecesario en el proceso. Y debido a que no tengo más remedio que incluir la oscuridad en mi experiencia, también está muy incluida en mi trabajo. La línea específica de Belleza que busco expresar prospera en el contraste.
Para entender la filosofía detrás de sus pinturas, ofrece la siguiente cita: [Un] estado de ánimo de destrucción y renovación universal... ha dejado su huella en nuestra época. Este estado de ánimo se hace sentir en todas partes, política, social y filosóficamente. Vivimos en lo que los griegos llamaban el kairos —el momento adecuado— para una "metamorfosis de los dioses", de los principios y símbolos fundamentales. (...) Las generaciones venideras tendrán que tener en cuenta esta transformación trascendental si la humanidad no quiere destruirse a sí misma a través del poder de su propia tecnología y ciencia. —C. G. Además de su gran talento, Yasmine está muy alineada con los valores de WOMB y entiende la esperanza que tenemos para crear un mundo más hermoso a través del arte y la comunidad. Durante su residencia creará una pieza dedicada al Útero basada en la visión y las energías que percibe durante su estancia.
